MMBCC News - 30 June 2013. UPDATE.

Hi Everyone,

Please have a look at the following from the dirt committee -

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The Mansfield BMX Track project has been brewing for some time now. Here's a quick update and a call for help.
The final touches are now being put on the planning permit application for the Mansfield BMX Track at the entrance to town, west of the wetlands. We now have some really exciting plans drafted by a professional BMX trail building and design company, Dirtz. The track design is of a standard that will support club level, state level and potentially national level events!
As part of our application to council we need to show how many hours of volunteer work have been pledged and by whom.
If you would be willing to help out on site once the project reaches the construction phase please email Paul Fletcher at paulfletcher30@bigpond.com, with how many hours you are willing to pledge to the project. Volunteer work would potentially include digging etc. associated with the track construction and drainage, landscaping around the track, planting seedlings as part of revegetation works, building fences.
This information of volunteer hours will also be used in any grant applications that the club prepares in relation to this project.
Also, if you know of anyone outside the club who would be willing to help please forward on this information and make sure they email Paul soon.
THANKS!

(and this is the original).

Well isn't it nice to have a bit of Winter upon us with those nice frosty mornings.

The wonderful Road committee has put together a Winter Road Race Series for everyone to enjoy (provided you have a licence and are nice to all the officials).

It starts on Sunday 16 June at the Botanical Park. PLEASE be there at 9.30am for registration and all races will start at 10.00am.

Click on this link (www.mmbcc.org.au/road-racing) to go to the web site for more details. We have also uploaded to Google Calendar for the sophisticated rider. (www.mmbcc.org.au/events-calendar).

Cheers,

Hi Everyone,

A couple of more things to add to last weeks newsletter - one for the roadies and one for the dirties.

To: Graham Slaney

Hello Graham,

I have been speaking with Jim Walker and he assures me that you are the man to contact about bike riding in the Blue Range area.

We are about to start logging in comp 101 which is the last comp of Mt Samaria rd.

We will be there probably a month and will work our way out Blue Range hopefully thinning 3 comps.

If everything go’s to plan we will commence thinning Monday the 6th, if you could pass this on to your fellow bike riders that would be great and also let them know that the area will be signed with no entry signs and I would expect that no one enters the coupe site for safety reasons.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to call.

Thanks

MMBCC News - 3 May 2013

Hi Everyone,

Things are a little quiet on the club front at the moment.

The Saturday and Sunday rides are still happening and a few of us are doing Monday nights at 5.20 from the roundabout. The road crew is putting together the Winter calendar however Wangaratta's road series is definitely worth a look for our members who are keen for a race soon remembering that our club licence allows us to race there.

There is no Autumn series of MTB Dirt Crits organised for this season so if you would like to do Sunday Social rides please just post the info on the MMBCC Facebook page to let others know

Well done to Bruce with a recent win in his division in Beechworth on the road and Stefan has placed well in the tour of the Southwest coming 26th. Obviously his tactical "cross training method" up BawBaw stood him in good stead.

Stefan Vaivars finished 26th overall at the Tour of the South West in Masters C grade.

This included 13th in the Stage 3 crit.

Bob Beattie notes the there is a ride up Buller tomorrow with breakfast before. (See Below). Call Bob for the time of the breakfast.

Hi John

My regular bunch (Bayside Bandidos) have about 15 riders coming up Saturday to do a Buller ride.

We intend leaving Botanic Park at 9-30 AM after having breakfast at Cafe 41.

Plan is for an easy ride to Mirrimbah, then cut loose up the hill, wait up top for all, have a coffee then ride back.

Mansfield Buller club members welcome to join in with us.

Thanks

Bob Beattie, 0437 970 358

The exec are meeting soon so if anyone has any thoughts please email or call me.

Cheers,

John.

MMBCC News - 31 March 2013

Hi Everyone,

It was a great day at Mirimbah last weekend and again thanks to Tina for organsing it. Well done to David Bock taking out the Mountain/Dirt trophy again.

Apologies also for not getting the road cup sorted. The storm on the last Thursday threw a few spanners in the works and I was hoping that we could somehow reschedule the race to have a fitting end to a well contested season however our obligations to race regulations means that the results to date will stand.

Well done to Bruce Halket who too has had a consistent season and just edged out Darren who has raced well and persistently. No surprises that Mitch took out third - he's doing very well with his career and David Jagger's fourth reflects his improvement over the season. Will Mac did well to place fifth in both the road and mountain series. Well done too to Christine and Julie for regularly keeping the blokes in line - both of you have raced very well. Results in the Road Results section of the web site - www.mmbcc.org.au

A few acknowledgements: Thanks to John Lithgow and the crit crew and all the volunteers for putting on the criterium/road race. It's a lot of work but is our primary income generator ( to the tune of about $5000.00) and I think is a good thing for our club to be part of as it's now one of the top events in the state series. Thanks to our volunteers over the season-it wouldn't work without all of you. Well done to Dave and Tom for keeping the Dirt Crits happening - again a lot of work. Thanks to our sponsors: The Delatite Hotel, The Alpine Butchery, All Terrain Cycles, The Scody High Country Cycle Challenge/ tour de flavour, The Deck, The Mansfield Community Bank, Stewart's Bus Lines, Bakker Plumbing and the Friday Foundation. We do get real benefit from these sponsors. Thanks to the exec who do a lot of work behind the scenes. We meet most months so if you want to provide feedback please shoot me an email. Our AGM will come up quickly so please have a think about how you feel about the club, what we can be doing and if you want a role in that.

The autumn series of events will be out soon so keep an eye on the site.

Cheers , John.

MMBCC News - Special edition

Mansfield and District Community Bank Criterium and Mt Buller Road Race.

(From John Lithgow - Event Organiser, MMBCC).

Mansfield MtBuller Cycling Club should be very proud of what it has achieved in only four years of staging the Mansfield and District Community Bank Criterium and Mt Buller Road Race with entries rising from 60 in 2010 to 465 in 2013 - 143 riders competed in the crit, 322 riders in the road race.

Thank you to the dedicated group of club members that make this event happen.  You all did a fantastic job and it would be impossible to stage this event without your assistance.  A special thank you to the Crit Committee - Ian Conrick, John Eisner and Di Condie.

Some of our members may not be aware that we are now part of the Victorian State Series of races.  Cycling Victoria are to be congratulated for this initiative and we should all be very encouraged that our club is involved in the elite group of clubs selected by CV to host the 7 events. This recognition can only be positive for the event and the club.

The feedback from the competitors was very positive, praising the club, the course and the volunteers.  The results have been posted on the CV website.  This year (for the first year) all Buller riders had transponders. Have a look at the times and put yourself in the field!

Early estimates show a club profit in excess of $5,000.00.

I would also like to congratulate Ross Hopkins (Masters B) Steffen Vaivars and Alain Guerin (Masters C) for flying the club flag in the Buller race.

My sincere thanks again to those people who give of their time and energy for the benefit of the club.

Finally on behalf of the MMBCC, I would like to extend our appreciation for the generous sponsorship of the Mansfield and District Community Bank and the Mt Buller Resort Management Board.

John "Poppy" Lithgow.

MMBCC News - 17 February 2013

Hi Everyone,

Apologies, it’s been a while since I’ve written something although there have been bits and pieces coming through relating to various events.

Firstly, well done to our member Simon Gerrans who took out a tactical stage win at the Tour Down Under – great effort again.

Well done to Mitch Greenway and Foley Lachal who were successful in their applications to the Club’s Rider Devopment Grant which was conceived last year and ratified at the AGM. The Club’s contribution will some way to helping our great junior riders attend high level events.

Speaking of high level events, both have done well at recent events in NSW along with Kian MacKinnon who is showing heaps of  potential – well done guys.

Road Racing

The road series continues with some novel races which have been enjoyed (in hindsight) by all those attending. Bruce’s report is on the web site at /results

That’s all for the moment but keep an eye on the site and also the Facebook page which has a few different bits on what the mountain crew is up to.

Cheers,

Hi Everyone,

It’s on again! First road race is this Thursday so entries to Di by Wednesday 8pm please. A Big thanks to Bruce and the road crew for pulling together the calendar (www.mmbcc.org.au/road-racing) – it’s a lot of work and adjusting so well done. On the subject of road racing, it’d be great if just a couple more people considered commissairing. It’s not hard and spreads the work for the rest of us. Speak to myself or Bruce if you are interested.
Also, a big thank you to Sharron Jones who has done a lot of commissairing for us over the last few years and is having a well-deserved break. Sharron has taken the job on conscientiously and has always been there to fill a few gaps in our roster. Thank you Sharron.
I know the mountain bike calendar isn’t far away so keep an eye on the site. Meanwhile please read Katie’s request for help for the MTN National series below. It’s a great weekend and a great way to be involved if not actually riding!

G'day All ( from Bruce)
It's almost SCODY High Country Cycle Challenge time again!
In the same way as the last few years, I'm happy to offer reduced price entries to the SHCCC to MMBCC members. There are still jerseys available and as long as you enter soon, you'll get one.
Last year's discount was 40%. This year I'm offering 50% off the normal entry fee to MMBCC members. Just like last year, you need to own a full set of MMBCC kit to qualify for the discount.
If you already own a full set of kit, email me and I'll send you the code you need to get the discount.
If you don't yet own a full set of kit, you need to contact Fiona Greenway (the Keeper of the Kit) on 0458 316 465 or email fgreenwa@bigpond.net.au and organise to buy a set. The club has recently re-stocked so I'm sure she'll have something to fit you. Once Fiona lets me know you've bought the kit, I'll email you the code.
If 50% off is still a bit steep, what about a free entry? We need just a few workers for the morning of Saturday 16 March. In return for a few hours work on the Saturday, I'll offer a FREE entry to the Sunday ride which, yes, will include the jersey. (I know many of you will be involved in organising the Critierium, so please check with John Lithgow first, in case he needs you - johnrlithgow@bigpond.com )
Information on the ride can be found at www.shccc.com.au … a reminder too that a 'full set of kit' means jersey, knicks AND socks too!
Cheers,
Bruce Halket.

MMBCC News - Christmas Edition

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, Well done to Tina for organising a great Christmas Event last week. The hundred plus members, friends and family who turned up to the Zoo had a great evening.

Apologies, I don’t seem to have a recent MTN report although I did hear the pairs race was attended with enthusiasm.

Next years races will start sooner than you think – Monday 14 Jan for Mountain Bikers, and Thursday 17 Jan for the Roadies.  Keep an eye on the website as the calendar will be out soon. Good training would be to do some of the Clubs Challenge Rides – Stoneflys, Buller, Old Tolmie and Eildon Hill. Josh and Ross have already been active so do the ride and send Mark an email with your best time.

Thanks to our sponsors (as listed on the side of the website). Whenever you can please consider reciprocating their contribution and let them know you are part of the bike club (if appropriate) for their feedback.

Thanks to the exec team who have all been working consistently behind the scenes to keep the club running smoothly. Everyone is really putting in – well done.

Thanks too, to our many volunteers who also keep the club functioning on a weekly basis.

Have a great and safe Christmas.

MMBCC News - 21 November 2012

Hi Everyone,

A Big week for Mitch this week with a good win on our new local course which was enthusiastically raced by 32 other participants ( see Bruce’s report below) and a great win in the  State Mountain Bike Championships (see Fiona’s report below). Well done!!

As I write Tim Ross is forging ahead with 7Peaks7days. Day one saw Bruce and Tim battle snow on Mt Baw Baw with Bruce sustaining an unfortunate hip injury in the slush. He’s hoping to be up and pedalling tomorrow. I joined Tim on Lake Mountain for a leisurely 120km yesterday and he went on to ride over 200km with Mansfield to Buller to Whitfield today. A few more of us will be joining them in Bright for a trip to Omeo and back.

Mountain Biking

The 2012 State XC Championship was held on Sunday 18th November at the Mt Avoca Winery

Mitch placed 1st in the Under 17 Men’s category – winning the State Champion title

Kian placed 3rd in the Under 15 Men’s category – in his first race at a State Championship

So as you can see both boys did extremely well and represented their club tremendously!

The club now has a State XC Champion and a State XC podium place getter amongst their junior members

This is terrific considering the MTB side has only been going for a few years!

And as far as I can see the MTB juniors are only going to get better as times goes on with the depth of membership the club has.

Many thanks, Fiona Greenway

MMBCC News - 6 November 2012

Hi Everyone,

Good to see lots of action at Rifle Butts with some really great racing. The road crew too are getting some good turnouts and it was good to try the time trial over the new Graves Rd course.

Well done to Tina for running around and drumming up some sponsorship prizes which we’ll be giving away over the next few weeks. Consider our sponsors when planning stuff  -  they’re on our website: Alpine Butchery, Delatite Hotel, The Zoo, The Maze as well as All Terrain Cycles, High Country Cycle Challenge, Tour de Flavour and The Deck.

It’d be good to see a few more of our women out there on the road as well. A lot of members feel a little tentative and undertrained to race but Di does a great job handicapping and it’d be good to encourage as many people to participate regardless of anticipated performance.  The road crew have designed shorter races this season so even though you may not feel up to it, have a go.

Road report:

Despite a cool, blustery southerly, twenty three enthusiastic cyclists fronted up for the first individual time trial of the cycling season on the new Graves Road course. With nowhere to hide on the hilly seventeen km course it proved to be a good test early in the season. Allan Gerrans rode off strongly from John Eisner and Rod Stewart and at the turnaround was working his way steadily up the field. Foley Lachal and Laurie Harding were riding with determination and Jock Brega looked smooth as they approached the turnaround. All worked well against the substantial headwind on the return leg and finished in the top five. Christine Hopkins, Tim Ross, Darren Bakker, Mick Feeney and Steve Plummer also had a steady race with good results.

It was Mitch Greenway though who flew down the downwind leg and didn't seem to slow down much after the turnaround at the Broken River. Smashing the field apart he recorded a time two minutes faster than the nearest competitor, Jock, to take the honours for the evening.

All results – CLICK HERE.

Cheers,

John.

Hi Everyone,

Mountain Biking

There was a buzz in the air on Monday night – and it wasn’t just the mosquitos at Riflebutts Reserve. 32 people lined up to race in the handicap race and with a flurry of excitement (and dust!), the race was on.

Sibling rivalry was at its best with Dan and Tom MacMunn chasing each other around the track, almost side-swiping Bella MacMunn on one of the corners – luckily the duty team and onlookers were there to keep them in check (with loud cheers and heckling!). Unnerved, Bella stayed strong and had the last laugh by finishing in the top five. The evening was filled with inter-family competitiveness with Matthew Empey racing against Kate Empey, Rod and Aaron Sargent battling it out until Rod had a mechanical, the Greenway’s powering ahead, along with the Grundy’s, and the Lachal’s also going strong with a team of four racing on the night.

Yully decided to have a pit-stop on every lap after constantly dropping his chain by getting some ‘mad air’ on the jump, pleasing the spectators.

It was a close handicap and very exciting for onlookers. New-comer Glenn Peck raced well along with Ava Kappes, Adrian Lawrence, Brett Stevens, Ben Annear and Kate Empey, all finishing in the top ten. Well done to April Lachal on taking first place, she will definitely be one to watch as the season progresses. Ewan’s “sandbagging” tactics in an earlier race worked, securing him with second, and after his relaxing holiday Flynn Bowker raced well to take third place.

It was great to see more new faces at the Monday night races. If you would like to join in the action make sure you register by 8pm Sunday night to Tom MacMunn 0428 327 763, to assist us with handicapping.

Duty team for Monday 5th November: Rob Greenway, Rachael Grundy, Cam Lachal (Bunting)

MMBCC News - 23 October 2012

Hi Everyone,

Road Racing

Great weather and improving fitness saw twenty three cyclists line up for last Thursday's first handicap race for the season on the Barwite loop course. Daryl Rielly, Dave Clark, David Jagger and Chris Washusen took off first as the limit crew. Getting somewhat spread out up Coombsberg, the bunch realised their only hope of staying out was to stay together so a tactical regrouping ensued down the hill.

Further back, Steve Plummer cleverly managed to jump onto the scratch bunch of Jock Brega, Bruce Halket, Tim Ross and Darren Bakker. Although working hard the bunch couldn't make inroads into the limit group who rode well for Jagger and Washusen's first race. Finally Daryl Rielly was able to Jump Dave Clark and took out a well deserved win. Jock Brega took out fastest time for the evening. Thanks to the Alpine Butchery for the gutsiest effort prize which went to David Jagger who placed third.

Mountain Biking

A horde of 41 riders descended on Riflebutts Reserve for the third race in the spring-summer MTB dirt-crits series.

With 13 eager contestants there was no holding back in the kids race.

So fierce was the competition that when Jamieson McNamara crashed, his sister Ebony rode straight over him. Thankfully, there were no hard feelings or lasting injuries!

The adults race was equally competitive and saw all riders finishing within one lap of each other.

Tom MacMunn and Mitch Greenway steamed around the course completing six laps, but couldn’t reach the podium thanks to some tough Irish handicapping.

In a mixed night for the MacMunns, Paula put in an impressive effort to finish fifth, while young Bella showed guts by completing her lap despite injuring a finger.

Fourth place went to Foley Lachal, third to Trev Arnold, and second and first were nabbed by Paul MacNamara and Tod Howland.

Duty roster is now up on the website. Please have a look for when you are rostered on. If you cannot make it, please arrange to swap with another person. Once arranged, please advise Katie Moore of change.Monday nights at Riflebutts Reserve. Kids races register at 5:15pm for 5:30pm race,Adults register at 5:45 for 6:00pm race.

See you next week!

FInal Call!
So far we have one person keen to ride in the M2M 2013 (Murray to Moyne). If there are a few more prepared to commit then we can run with the event otherwise we will opt for plan B ......

Plan B might look like a "round the lake" or other club based ride that we will use to fundraise for the hospital. Plan B could be a good option. Please get back to me with your ideas/wishes.

MMBCC News - 9 October 2012

Hi Everyone

We’re off and running with a good turnout at the Dirt Crits on Monday night. The calendar is up on the website ready to view or print. Road racing starts this Thursday and the first Kids MTB race is next Monday. Good luck everyone.

This from Fiona:

MMBCC Dirt Bike Crits

Mansfield’s Rifle Butts MTB Park came alive on Monday 8th October with Mansfield Mount Buller Cycling Club holding its first race for the 2012/2013 season. The MTB Park looked fantastic after Shannon Rademaker, Yully Arnold and Laurie Harding rallied a willing band of helpers on the previous Sunday to do track maintenance, weed reduction work and a general overall clean up of the area. A huge thank you to all who attended and put in the effort to get the course ready for the first race!

A field of 17 riders turned out with 11 adults and 6 juniors contesting the “Irish Handicap”. The race is held with all riders on the course at the same time, racing a set amount of laps depending on their ability and going off handicapped times. This gives all riders an equal chance to finish on the podium. Nick Howland like many riders admitted it was the first time they had been on the bike for a few months so the race was always going to be tough going for some.

First rider off Mitch Greenway had to cover 6 laps of the course. Three minutes later in time waves over the next eleven minutes the rest of the field were sent out with less laps to do and hopefully to finish before anyone else. Junior girls Ava Kappes and Bella MacMunn certainly showed they weren’t going to let racing against adults stop them from riding hard and completing their laps in consistent times and with huge smiles on their faces.

With all riders on the course at the same time it was hard to tell who was leading the race. Katie Moore and Paula MacMunn rode well and Chris Morecroft kept a constant tempo over his laps. John Eisner powered away from Dave Bock and Yully was left behind by Cam & Foley Lachal. Coming into the final lap, 15 of the 17 riders were down to their last lap. Tom MacMunn increased his speed but would it be enough? The race had been handicapped perfectly.

In his first race for the club Adrian Lawrence was pleased to come away the winner. Showcasing his Downhill skills Lawrence Prendergast looked to have second position in the bag 100 meters from the line. Taking the inside line of the final corner Mitch Greenway came through for second with Lawrence claiming third place. Foley Lachal rode hard to secure fourth place coming in ahead of Dad Cam in 9th. Frank David rode well to come 5th with Tom MacMunn, Rob Greenway, John Eisner and Nick Howland filling the top 10 positions.

The club holds races on Monday nights at the Rifle Butts MTB Park with Kids races starting at 5.30pm and Adults races starting at 6pm. The club welcomes new members and encourages everyone to come along and watch a race!

The first road race will be on Thursday albeit with a fairly cold looking forecast.

You can now also renew your MTN and Road licences online. It’s fairly straightforward and by doing it online you can choose the value add option of joining the “other discipline” ie if you usually hold a road licence you can choose to add a mountain bike licence at a discount and vice versa. If you are a roadie, you’ll have to renew your CA licence first ( for 2013) before doing the MTBA value add as you will need the receipt as proof for MTBA.

Most road members signed up last year for the club only deal which will be available again this year. It’s significantly cheaper than signing online but you can only race in Mansfield or Wangaratta, you can’t sign up online (we will have forms and prices before the end of the year) and you can’t value add.

Thanks again to our sponsors: Alpine Butchery and the Delatite Hotel for supporting last night’s event.

Cheers , John.

MMBCC News - 29 September 2012

Hi Everyone,

The subcommittees are putting the final touches on what look like an exciting season for both Road, Social and Mountain but the bulk of it is now up and running on the website as well as a downloadable summer calendar.

A couple of other things:

New Sponsor

Dave and Carol of Alpine Butchery have kindly agreed to be a club sponsor for the season. Please go in and thank them for their kind sponsorship (and purchase your supplies). CLICK HERE for their web site.

Murray to Moyne

Jenny Lovick is looking for an initial show of interest for next year’s Murray to Moyne. We need to get four people who are interested in participating to be able to complete the initial entry form – then all the organising and getting a team together can be done at a later date for this fun weekend. Traffic Controller course

We need more volunteers to get qualified traffic controllers for Tour de Flavour.

Shire is considering paying for a course on Saturday October 27.

The course will run for about 6 hours and will likely be held at the Council offices in Highett Street. There will be no cost to participants and even lunch will be provided.

But before we can book the course, we need some people to put their hands up to do the course.

The qualifications would see them be available to help out at other events such as the High Country Festival and Targa High Country, if they're interested. It's even the first step necessary to get paid work as a marshal at events like Targa.

Please email Bruce - bruce@bikevents.com.au - or call him on 0419 533 120.

Also, a reminder to all those that got their qualifications last year to please make themselves available for the 2013 Tour de Flavour, 16 & 17 March. It was a struggle to get enough volunteers for the TdF weekend earlier this year and we'd really appreciate traffic marshals being available - if only to save John Lithgow and Bruce from heart problems!

Similarly, Nicole Nye is looking for volunteers to help at the November Festival. If you did the traffic management course last year and can help – let her know.

The High Country Festival requires volunteers to assist with road closures for the Torchlight Parade & Fireworks display on Friday 02 Nov 7.00 to 9.30pm
&
Grand Parade on Saturday 03 Nov 10am to 12.30pm
Greatly appreciate your assistance
Kind Regards
