MMBCC MTB Update - 19 March 2012

Dirt Crit Update 19/03/12

Well a beautiful Monday afternoon and a cracking track after the recent rains brought the riders out in storm, with 9 in the kids race and 22 in the last of the Irish handicap races of the Summer Series.  It seems that as the summer has progressed into early autumn everyone is gaining fitness and speed making handicapping a bit of a challenge!  Taking out the win this week was Frank David who will surely be doing five laps the next time we race!  The next three over the line were young Flyn Bowker, Jai Lerch-McKinnon and Matthew Empey all of who are improving very quickly – great to see some even younger stars of the future up in the adult field!

Fresh from his travels (and successes) Mitch was unable to catch everybody but lead home a close pack of riders including Rob (You nearly stayed in front of him!!), Kian, Chad, Kate Empey, Tom McMunn, Foley and Cam (again the young’un taking the honours) – all of them finishing within a minute of each other!  All in all a great night of racing and brilliant to see some new faces taking part.

We hope to see more new faces next week for our “Little Person/Big Person race”. This will be a fun event, part of the Active Families challenge, in collaboration with Active Mansfield. If you ever wanted to try out mountain biking, this is the time to come along and see what it’s all about! Take part in a social ride around Riflebutts Reserve or have a crack at the race! MMBCC MTB Update - 12 March 2012

Dirt Crits Write-up 12/03/12

Bike Buller Festival

It was a massive weekend at the Bike Buller Festival with a great Mansfield and Mt Buller contingency, consisting of the Bike Buller team (Yully, Chad, Cam & Dave Empey), Tom, Foley and Kian. All local riders ‘smashed it’! A truly fantastic effort, with riders taking part in a number of races over the long weekend.

There were a few tumbles and lucky near misses with Cam taking a bit of a blow to the head, Yully taking a chunk out of his knee and Chad winning a prize for the most amusing injury(?!!)

(Please note: times for the Brake Burner were unavailable at time of writing)

Foley scooped up a host of prizes and finished 2nd overall in the Under 18 category. Foley took 2nd in the 50k race (3:33) and 3rd in the 25k race (1:36). Well done Foley!

Dave Empey took 1st place in the 30k race (40-49 category) with a finishing time of 2:32, and in the 25k race came 7th (1:36).

Kian Lerch-Mckinnon finished 1st in the 30k race (U 18 category) with a time of 3:01, and 4th in the 25k race (1:43).

Chad finished 8th in the 30k race (18-39 category) – 3:11, and 41st in the 25k race (1:38).

Cam came 27th in the 30k race (18-39 category) with a time of 3:46. Then, after recovering from his pretty spectacular tumble, came 108 in the 25k race (2:08).

Yully took 68th place in the 50k race (18-39 category) with a time of 3:55, and 30th in the 25k race (1:33).

Tom finished 16th in the 30k race (18-39 category) with a time of 3:28

Awesome effort and big congratulations to all the competitors – makes you really proud! Well done!! For full result details please see the Rapid Ascent website:

Dirt Crits:

Monday night saw the second round of the “Irish Handicap” series. There was a smaller crowd, to be expected after a big weekend of racing at Bike Buller Festival, but a competitive field non-the-less!

A few thrills and spills with Tom coming off his cyclo-cross bike, Laurie jack-knifing on a turn whilst chasing Tom, and last week’s winner Jem Davies losing his chain and taking him back a few places, which was a shame.

It was a tight race with Dave Moore and Jason sharing the lead and battling it out for 1st place. Fantastic ride by Paula MacMunn too!

1st place: Dave Moore (who swears he didn’t rig the handicapping!) – 4 laps, 34:10

2nd place: Jason Parker – 4 laps, 34:20

3rd place: Paula MacMunn – 3 laps, 34:41

Next week will be the 3rd and final race of the “Irish Handicap” series (for the Summer series at least!). Come along for a great ride. Come on Stefan, you know you want to have a go!

Duty: Kerryn McNamara & Jason Parker

Little person, Big person race:

The last race of the Summer series (Monday 26 March) we are looking to hold a ‘taster race’ for anyone looking to try out Mountain biking, specifically geared towards the younger ones. To be held in conjunction with Active Mansfield. Details being confirmed at the moment so stay tuned!

Upcoming events:

Murrindindi Cycle club are organising a MTB holiday to Forrest (home of the Otway Odyssey) over the Easter weekend. The group are planning to stay at the caravan park in Forrest, and plenty of riding and fun are scheduled for the weekend! For more info and to register your interest, please contact Jason Parker 0439 108 832.

If you have any events you would like to share on the MTB page of the MMBCC website, please contact Katie Moore 0415 369 297.

MMBCC MTB Update 5 March 2012

MMBCC MTB Update 05/03/12

A snazzy new race format was unveiled on Monday night by Dave Moore : The graded handicap combo race! Unlike a normal handicap race this format meant that D-graders only had to race 3 laps of the course, while C – A graders raced 4 laps, making it more inclusive and fun for all involved. It took a fair bit of initial organising and mathematical calculations, but the overall feedback was that it was a success!

It was interesting to see A graders and D graders setting off at the same time, racing each other but keeping in the back of your mind that the A graders had to do an extra lap in order to beat their starting competitors.

Big congratulations to the ever improving Jem Davies. At just 12 years old he took out the win holding off the charging Tina McDonnell and Laurie Harding.

1st: Jem Davies (3 laps) 28:37

2nd: Tina McDonnell (3 laps) 28:43

3rd: Laurie Harding (4 laps) 29:44

Lots of smiling faces at the end and we finished at the respectable time of 7pm! There was even time for a socialise at the end (and time to see Tina in her beasty 4x4  wrench Frank’s car out of a ditch!)

A winning format all round and one that we will continue with for the rest of the summer series, which concludes at the end of March. Next week will see an extra twist to the format with A-graders to complete 5 laps of the course.

The Autumn series and calendar is due to be confirmed this week at the MTB sub-committee meeting. So, stay tuned!

Kate Empy and Cam Lachal on duty next week. Please be there before 5:45pm to register.

Enjoy the week ahead and all the best to all those racing at the Bike Buller Festival this weekend! There will be quite a few of us heading up there so get in contact if you would like to take part in the festivities.

MMBCC MTB Update 21/02/12

MMBCC MTB Update 21/02/12

Good turnout at Dirt Crits this week, despite the rain, and I must say the track was pretty sweet!

There were 12 entries in the kids race and lots of big smiles out on the track, along with some extraordinary gorilla noises from Jamieson MacNamara – think there may be a Yully protégé on the way there!  Well done to all kids for a great race.

The Adults had a graded scratch race this week incorporating  a new section of the track called ‘Bogan’s beginnings’, created by students at the High school with guidance from Shannon . Great work team!

D grade winners were Jem Davies 25:07, Paula McMunn 27:13 and Kate Empy 26:57. C & A grade did a longer loop which cut into ‘rubbish run’ for a super-fun loop! C grade winners were Will MacDonald 26:01, Dave Bock 26:01 and Ben Annear (after stopping to assist a fellow team-mate after a stack) 27:06. B-grader Dave Moore joined the A grade race this week doing 5 laps of the course – good effort! An exciting sprint finish was displayed by Chad and Mitch with Chad taking 1st place 32:57 and Mitch 32:58. 3rd place went to Laurie Harding 36:17. Well done everyone on a great race!

Next week will be a handicap race kicking off at 6pm sharp.  Please be there 15 minutes before to register with your MTBA licence. Kate Empy and Rob Greenway on duty.

A BIG ‘well done’ should also be extended to Chad, Foley, Cam, Jason and Dave Empy who participated in the Kona Odyssey race in Forrest on the weekend.  The boys took part in either the 100k or 50k challenge and by all accounts did very well!  Results can be found on the Kona Odessy website  (www.otwayodyssey.com )

Mitch will be taking part in the Australian MTB championships this weekend, to be held in Adelaide, and then off to Newcastle next Wednesday for round 4 of the National Series. Go Mitch!!

Upcoming events:

Lake Mountain Granite Grind this weekend, 25 February: http://lakemountainresort.com.au/latest-news/granite-grind

Snowy Triple Trail MTB Challenge, 7 & 8 April, Snowy Mountains, Jindabyne NSW: http://www.rollingground.com.au/ . Please note the club has been offered 2 free entries to this event, on the condition that it is distributed to 1 male or female junior entry AND 1 male or female open entry. Please contact Katie Moore (0415 369 297) or Shannon (0409 552 564) if you are interested!

Social Ride: There are a few of us heading up to Buller on 3 & 4 March to do some riding at stay at the Bike Buller Lodge with Yully. All welcome! Contact Katie Moore (0415 369 297) if you would like to join in.

MTB - Tolmie Sports

Saturday saw the sun come out in just as much force as the locals at the Tolmie Sports Day. The whole day was a hustle and bustle of activities that tickled the eyes and underarms of all ages.

Axes were swung in the centre ring with vigour all day while kids smashed spuds as they rolled off the table. Others whittled little twigs, while some little miniature farm machines bailed hay to the amusement of all that saw. A talented bunch of horse riders tackled an obstacle coarse side by side and some extraordinary dogs showed that fences really are no obstacle for a bounding hound.

Just when you thought your eyes where full of good ol' county town entertainment the announcement came "The Three Man Challenge is about to begin"! I'd never seen an instant amalgamation quite like it. Everybody squashed by the sidelines to see the event unfold.

Beginning with the woodchoppers, who by this stage in the day must surely have tiered shoulders. They swang and chopped with more power and enthusiasm than you would see for the national title! Once chopping their block into pieces each axeman lumbered over with unstoppable momentum to tag their team mate. Off the runners went, in a tight bunch of chaos. Each arriving at a 35kg sack of happiness which they had to charge down a race and over the Tolmie Tavern truck, bumping and pushing and tumbling each other while attempting to scramble over the tray before dumping the sack and sprinting back down the race to tag the third and final challengers.
That's were our team of cycle powered expeditionaries were waiting in anticipation of tackling the almighty Tolmie Sports Ground Super Crits MTB Criterion Trail. With the race warming up it was that little green frog in the ATC top Foley Lachal to tag out first with not more than a second or two gap before the other ATC shirts of Cad Meek and Shannon Rademaker came bellowing up from behind.
Foley somehow managed to fend off the two giants through the back section until the final climbing bend where in front of the HUGE crowd Chad Meek made his most impressive passing blunder to date! Clipping the rear wheel while attempting a gentleman’s pass he sent himself sliding into the grass giving Foley the chance of a lifetime to perform his magic. Taking the win for his team in the black bibs, followed by Shannon Rademaker and Chad Meek managed to remount his bike and take out third for his team.

Well done to all the competitors as it truly was the spectacle of the day!

Cheers ATC for sponsoring the event, and the members of the MMBCC for participating and helping to make a fantastic day for all!

MMBCC MTB Results - Round 7

Well done everyone last night - the kids had a great race with lots of them setting a new PB.  Katie Moore was flying in the handicap race, good to see Tina back and take second and Frank took out third in his second race with us.  Jason Parker is a hard man.  He raced all weekend in the Garmin 24hr and then rolled out last night and stayed within sight of his group all race!
I'm after some feedback about races.  There is an option to race handicap races where D grade riders ride 4 laps, C and B grade riders ride 5 laps and A graders ride 6.  This would mean some tricky handicapping but would be achievable.  It would mean that everyone would race for about 35-40min.  The other thing is that some people have said that they really enjoy the handicap format.  We will look at the calendar for after christmas this week and some feedback on what type of races people are keen on.  Use the feedback thing below and be a part of the conversation about our racing.
Cheers,
Tom

MMBCC MTB Results - Round 5

Steffan Vaivars and Darren Bakker are on duty for next week AND people are most welcome to whipper snip the trails before next Monday.  We are racing the long course.  Most of it looks good but another pass with the whipper snipper wouldn't hurt.  Thanks to Mick and Rob and Mitch the Start/Finish and the carpark looks great.

MMBCC MTB Results - Round 3

The first handicap race of the Summer Series was held on Monday night.  It saw 18 riders on a new lap that was designed to allow plenty of opportunities for passing.  Please pass any feedback on this new loop onto the MTB committee.  We have a handicap race scheduled about once a month for the Summer Series and it would be great to race a course that people enjoy.

thanks,
Tom

MMBCC MTB Results - Round 1

There was a great turnout for the first round of the Summer MTB Series on Monday night.  21 kids lined up for the first race of the evening everyone setting a time that they will try to beat throughout the season.  Some of the bigger kids will be encouraged to race with the adults over the next few weeks - so look out C and D grade.

D Grade  - Lachie Opie is one of those kids who has recently made the transition to racing with the adults.  He fooled the handicapper with his size (tiny) and speed (fast) and won in great style.  Nick Howland rode strongly in his first race, welcome Nick,  to finish third.

C Grade - Uschi Steedman reeled in Paul McNamara's early lead and finished very strongly to win C Grade.  All 8 riders finished within 5 minutes of the winner so the curses thrown at the handicapper by some were misguided.

B Grade - After Cam Lachal's lightning first lap, Laurie Harding and Isaac Heppell took over the front of the race and were within 10 metres of each other at the end of each lap.  Laurie had enough legs on the last lap but Isaac seems to have done enough to shake the 'downhiller' tag.  Mick Durham took a tumble (again) and Jason Parker was polite enough to ride around and not over him.

A Grade - Steffan Vaivars took one look at the start list and started licking his lips.  He took the lead from the start but Foley Lachal early on, and Chad Meek later in the race, kept him honest.  Steffan managed to stay away and deserved his 20 second win over Chad with Foley just staying clear of Bruce Halket.
In all 26 adults raced across 4 grades.  Well done all.
For full results and points click here.

AND a bit of housekeeping:
1.  Keep an eye on the MTB page on the website.  There are a couple of changes to race formats and duties for each race that will be posted later in the week.
2.  Please bring a current MTBA membership card to the race next week and each week after that.  We need to see these to ensure that everyone is covered in case of an accident.
