We Want You! - MMBCC News - Sun 25 Oct

The club wants NEEDS you for these three items:

Free Shuttle Day and BBQ at Mt Buller - Saturday 31 October

9 am start at Lower Tyrol Carpark (old Blue Dirt Pick up location) with two shuttle buses running till 1pm; then we’ll finish with a BBQ. All riders will need to participate in a pre-ride briefing as the signage won't be in place yet.

Keep in mind, we will only be shuttling the new, trail-bike specific trails - NOT the downhill trails.

Volunteer Marshals needed for VDHS

To be held on the weekend of 20-21 November at Mt Buller. This is one of the biggest fundraisers for the MMBCC and we need some corner marshals. Please contact Mel Green, who’s coordinating volunteers again (thanks Mel) via email.

MMBCC Executive Committee is seeking:

  • A junior member to join the executive;

  •  Anyone interested in becoming a commissaire for local road racing;

  •  Someone to take on Equipment Officer at Club; and

  •  Anyone that may have a borrowed club road bike at home (just doing an equipment check).

If interested in any of the above positions, or you have a loan bike, please contact Kate via email.

Dirt Crits Two-lap Consistency Test

By Damian Grundy

A beautiful evening greeted the XC die hard racers for this first dedicated night of XC racing of the 2026-2027 season.

A now somewhat traditional format for the first race with a consistency test; riders needed to complete two timed laps of the marked course and try to produce two laps of equal time. A field of 12 competitors took to the start line.

In the end it was Micah Chadd who produced two laps of identical time, 9min15sec, to win the evening.

Ben Grundy was 2nd with only 3 seconds difference between his 2 laps, 9min8sec and 9min5sec.

Alastair Ross was 3rd with 11sec difference, 10min21sec and 10min10sec.

Ben Ross was 4th with 12seconds difference, 8min13sec and 8min25sec. Ben took out the prize for fastest overall on the night.

In 5th place and first female was Nicole Hoebergen with 18 seconds difference, 11min22sec and 11min8sec.

And a special mention and congratulations to our new rider Andi Gough for her great two laps and being the rider with the longest duration on course.

Well done to all the competitors.

Here are the results.

Much to Ben Grundy’s chagrin, he missed out on being in the podium photo by selflessly volunteering to collect all the course marking arrows after the race. With thanks to Bruce for his agricultural editing skills, Ben was added to the podium photo, even though I’d thoughtfully taken his place on the second step.

Next week it’s a Gravity might at Blue Range.

Back to back win for the Limit group

By Di Condie

Thursday 22nd October drew a field of 16 riders taking on the course of Howes Creek Rd; a course deceptively difficult for what we call a flat course.

With a slight cross wind or head wind every which way we turned, riding smart and protecting the bunch from the breeze was key.

Off limit David Bock, Judi Duke and Di Condie departed some 14 minutes prior to the Scratch group of Ryder (last ride with the Club for a while) Chadd and Mark Ruttiman. Mark moving himself from midfield to take on a self imposed heavy training session staying with Ryder for most of the night off Scratch.

After Limit saw David McDonald and Steve Curnow depart 4 minutes later, then all groups departed 2 minutes apart.

At the turn around (kind of the half way mark) Bock and Condie were riding well together and sizing up their chances of staying out for a win; surprisingly most groups were still together.

Looking very strong was Janine Appleton, who managed to catch the group of Curnow and McDonald, McDonald staying with her for most of the ride home. Condie was wary of the very strong, fast fluid-looking 12 minute bunch of Darren Bakker, Damian Grundy and Steve Duke, but the homeward stretch just wasn’t quite long enough for them to catch the frontmarkers.

At the home straight Bock moved stealthily away from Condie to take the win, Condie in 2nd place; sensational finish by Ben Grundy from the 8 minute bunch to take out third, flashing past Appleton with a “take no prisoners to the finish line” approach (apparently learnt from Grundy senior – so he tells us), Janine finishing in 4th place.

Fastest time of the night awarded to Ryder Chadd.

Here are the results and thanks to Tim Chadd for the photo.

Next week we’re racing clockwise around the Barwite Loop, with a little detour out to Long Lane.

MMBCC at Around the Bay 2026

By Tim Ross

A number of MMBCC riders took part in ‘Around the Bay’ last weekend.

Simon Hall with son Oliver did the big loop, 220km (starting at 4:30am!), Tim Ross and son Ben did the 135km starting from Geelong (a more respectable 6:30am start), while Adrian Dowd did the 100km.  Any others we didn’t know about?

It was the perfect day for the event, blue skies, temperatures in the low to mid twenties, and roads/ lanes closed where they needed to be.

Highlights of the day (for Ben and Tim) were riding at or close to the front in the opening stanza from Geelong to Queenscliff, and the ferry ride across the Heads.

Lowlights were the headwind up the Bay (OK, it wasn’t that strong but it is 100km from Sorrento to Albert Park), and somehow missing the last turn resulting in a few extra k’s when we’d had enough (we blame poor marshalling).

A thoroughly enjoyable day!
